It was nearly 8 p.m. when I got a call from my oldest son, who was on his way home from the skateboard club.
He must have arrived at the nearest station by now.

He said, "Mom, what happened near our apartment?"

There was a lot of noise from the emergency vehicles a few minutes ago.
There is a fire station right behind our house, so it's not unusual to hear the roar of sirens.

When I looked out the window of our apartment, I smelled the burning and saw a lot of fire trucks and a crowd of people.
At the same time, there was a loud thunderstorm, and in no time at all, a torrential downpour began.

As I rushed downstairs, I saw flames and smoke coming from the building in front of me.
A shadow that looked like a charred person was being carried away on a stretcher by the emergency team.

The fire seemed to have started on the third floor, but the building's fire alarm didn't seem to be working.
We got in touch with a friend and his family who lived on the 10th floor of the building, and we all evacuated to our apartment.

In New York, where the ground was so solid, buildings that were 50 to 100 years old were commonplace.
Improvements to aging plumbing and cables have not kept up with the city's development.

Victims have been identified and investigations into the cause of the accident to the injured and witnesses continue.
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the sad news continues.
